What are deck footings?

Deck footings are the foundation of a deck that supports the structure and holds it in place. They are typically made of concrete and are buried underground to provide a stable base for the posts of a deck. Deck footings with brackets are the best option for a deck foundation as they keep the posts away from moisture holding concrete and soil. To ensure that your deck footings are long lasting, we:

Ensure that there is nothing buried below ground where your deck footings will be drilled;
Use our advanced footing digging equipment to create perfectly symmetrical and level holes;
Mix concrete for the deck footings with the strongest materials to guarantee longevity of the posts;
Meticulously set each footing and brackets, ensuring all the posts are perfectly squared.
What is the best footing for a deck?

The best footing for a deck is one that is made of concrete and is buried deep enough in the ground to provide a stable base for the posts. Additionally, the footing should be level and the correct size to support the deck’s weight and size.

How to build a solid deck foundation?

Assess the area
Before you begin, take a look at the area where you want to build your deck. Consider the type of ground, nearby trees, and any other obstacles that may impact your project. This will help you determine the type of footing hole digging equipment and time needed to complete your project;
Measure and mark out the area
Measure and mark out the area where you want to build your deck. This will help you identify the number of holes you'll need to dig, as well as the size of the posts, number of brackets, sonos tubes and the amount of concrete mix you'll need;
Dig the holes
Using the appropriate equipment, dig holes for the footings. Make sure that the holes are the correct size and depth as per your assessment. **This is the most crucial and labour-intensive part but you must not cut corners. Any deviation from the appropriate setting of the deck footings and brackets will result in a shortened life span for your whole deck;
Prepare the ground
Once the holes are dug, prepare the ground by removing any debris or loose soil;
Set the footings and brackets
Drop the Sonos Tubes into your hole and pour your concrete mix for the footing. While the concrete is setting use a string line to level and square the positioning of you brackets and install them on top.

Footings help to avoid contact between wooden posts and the soil below, increasing the life of your posts. Footings also help to prevent posts from sinking down under the weight of the deck;
Allow the concrete to cure
Allow the concrete to cure for at least 24 hours before continuing with the deck building process.
Install the posts
Once the concrete has had sufficient time to dry (between 24 hours to 72 hours) install the posts. Make sure that they are secure. You can add temporary support to keep them in place, or better yet, having a friend to help will make this step much easier.

Now that the hardest part of setting the foundation is completed, you can proceed with the rest of the deck build.

Frequently Asked Questions

Commonly asked questions about Deck Footings & Brackets
1
How far apart should you set posts for a deck?

The distance between deck posts will depend on the size and design of the project. Typically, the distance between posts ranges between 4 and 6 feet for a standard deck. However, this can vary depending on:

  1. The size of posts you are using, generally either 4×4, 6×6 or 8×8 deck posts;
  2. Length and width of the deck, as well as the load-bearing capacity;
  3. The type of wood or material used for the decking;
  4. Local building codes and regulations.

Generally the maximum spacing for posts for a standard deck is typically 6 feet on center (the distance between the center of one post to the center of the next post). For decks with larger spans or heavier loads, the post spacing may need to be closer together, typically 4 feet on center.

It is important to consult with a professional or check the local building codes in your area before determining the post spacing for your deck. They can help ensure that your deck is built to code and is structurally sound.

2
Do I need to put rebar in deck footings?

It is recommended to use rebar in deck footings to provide additional support and stability to the foundation of your deck.

3
Can a deck rest on the ground?

No, a deck should not rest on the ground. It needs to have a proper foundation, such as footings or piers, to ensure stability and safety. This will also extend the life of the deck by avoiding wood rotting.

4
What size posts to use for a deck?

The size of the posts used for a deck depends on the size and weight of the deck, as well as the type of soil and local building codes. Typically, 4×4 or 6×6 posts are commonly used for residential decks.

5
How deep to put deck footings in Ontario?

Deck footings should be buried deep enough in the ground to provide a stable base for the posts. The depth will depend on the type of soil and local building codes, but typically footings should be at least 12 inches below the frost line. For Ontario the average frost lines are about 4 feet deep, so your total depth for deck footings should be a minimum of 5 feet. Feel free to reach out to us to find out the specific depth requirements in your area.

6
Do you have to pour footings for a deck?

Pouring concrete footings is one of the most common methods used for deck foundations. It is important to pour footings for a deck as it provides a stable base for the posts and supports the weight of the deck. It also prevents the posts from having contact with moisture that is present in the ground and concrete.

6
What size footings do I need for a deck and how to calculate how many deck footings you need?

The size of footings you need for a deck will depend on the size and weight of the deck, as well as the soil conditions and local building codes. A professional deck footing company will be able to help you determine the correct size and number of footings for your deck. Additionally, some companies may offer a calculator tool on their website to help you estimate the number of footings you need for your deck.

7
What is the best foundation to use for your new deck?

The best foundation to use for a new deck will depend on your specific needs and circumstances. A professional deck footing company will be able to help you determine the best foundation for your deck based on factors such as the soil conditions, local building codes, and the size and weight of the deck.

8
