Fence posts; 4x4 or 6x6,

The truth is, just like with everything else, one option isn’t always better than the other. There are many factors to consider when deciding on 4×4 or 6×6 posts. More expensive posts are not always the better choice!

The benefits of 6x6 posts vs 4x4
6×6 fence posts offer pronounced durability and stability compared to 4×4 posts; this is an inescapable fact. 6×6 posts are engineered to withstand heavy wind stress, lasting 30 to 40 years versus 10 to 20 years. This longer lifespan means fewer replacements and lower long-term maintenance costs. The other often overlooked benefit is the rot resistance of 6×6 posts; this is not to say they won’t rot, they will just take longer to fail than 4x4s.
So wait… why are the 4x4s a better choice?
4×4 fence posts are objectively weaker than 6×6 posts, however, this is not always relevant! Consider this, if your backyard has old large trees and is surrounded by other homes that prevent high winds from hitting the fence, they won’t exhibit much lateral stress. Wind is the biggest enemy of fences! The next thing to consider is drainage; if the area where the fence is being built is elevated or has a drainage system that quickly dissipates water the potential for the post to rot is greatly reduced. Under these circumstances, using 4×4 posts is a sufficient, cost effective option.

Ok. So when should I spend the extra money on 6x6 posts?
If your fence is being built in an open area with high winds, such as a corner lot, or next to an open field, the 6×6 posts will provide extra stability against wind. It is equally important to use 6×6 posts in areas with sitting water, or in gulleys or swales where water drains. While the posts will still rot, it will take much longer for the post to fail. In these circumstances you are certainly going to get your money back on the extra investment!
